April: A Month Of Planning And Plotting

Of Lies and Zombies turned one-year-old this month! For what feels like forever, I worked hard on writing, editing, and publishing All The What Ifs and Of Lies and Zombies. It sucked up all my writing time and plotting energy. And if I'm honest, completely sapped me.

Yet during that time I had plenty of new story ideas. With my first two books shipped off into the great big world of publishing, it’s time to get back into the swing of exploring new ideas and finishing up current works in progress.

What are these stories? I’m glad you asked!

Magic Story of Magic (a working title): Magic Story of Magic is an adult fiction romance/coming of age story about a young woman named Lily Banks. Magic Story of Magic is a blast to write. It’s rooted in the real world, but filled with impossible magic tricks. It has lame jokes and kissing and to repeat MAGIC TRICKS (a thing I’m having far too much fun writing). The first draft of Magic Story is SO CLOSE to being done. I'll have updates on the cover, book blurb, and more soon!

Something Dumb To Do (the third book of the Richmond High series): The third book in the Richmond High series Something Dumb To Do is Quinn’s story. Told is a present and past switch off, Something Dumb To Do is the story of a girl trying to avoid her parents’ mistakes, while she denies the pesky truth that sometimes the past isn’t what we perceived. The first draft of Something Dumb To Do is roughly halfway complete and will include characters from All The What Ifs and Of Lies and Zombies! But I ain’t sharing who. Something Dumb To Do’s cover is already in the works. It’s so stinking cute, and I can’t wait to share it.

Book Four of the Richmond High series: This book has me in knots already, and I can’t say much about it yet. But here’s what I will share: Ashley Morgan is back but as a secondary character who will play a pivotal role in a high school girl’s life as she faces a major, life alerting decision. Sound familiar? Kind of. And that’s all I will say for now.

I’ve got more ideas in the works (for example an adult fiction with a social media twist and a fantasy story inspired by a Death Cab for Cutie song). I could keep going, but we'd be here for a long time.

Not only have I been plotting new stories, but I am blogging regularly again! There are four new monthly features on Ang Writes: Ang’s Top Five which features five books based on a random theme, a book review of an indie favorite, On My E-reader a shout out to the ebooks I’ve bought but haven’t read yet, and a monthly wrap up that's ever changing.

It’s a year of words, my friends! Reconnecting with the joy of writing just for fun without strings attached or publishing goals looming over my head. It’s amazing and freeing. And I can’t wait to share more with you all soon!

Newsletter Exclusive: A Brand New All The What Ifs Bonus Chapter

That's right, folks! This month's exclusive content for my newsletter subscribers is an All The What Ifs bonus chapter.

Not the exclusive All The What Ifs bonus chapter from Lucas's point of view at the back of Of Lies and Zombies, which I'm sure you've all read (*wink wink*) and loved! But a brand new scene that takes place the day before from Ashley's point of view. And y'all thought Christmas was over!

What's that? You'd like a little taste of what's to come? I guess if you insist:

what if ... we fell apart?

“Stop hoarding the cookie butter, Ashley. Or we’ll be beefing.”
Ashley Morgan looked up from the paper plate cradled in her lap, her eyes locking on her best friend Natalie. The clear blue sky overhead gazed down on the friends. The afternoon sun baked into the ground. Heat hung heavy in the air, leeching life out of the world, turning the grass brown, cracking the soil.
Ashley’s eyes narrowed on Natalie who jabbed a plastic knife at her.
“Beefing,” Natalie repeated, dragging out the word.
“Nat.” Ashley gestured toward the unopened jar of cookie butter on the quilted blanket next to her knee. “I haven’t even opened the jar.”
“I’m staking my claim early.”
“To the whole jar of cookie butter?”
“Cookie butter mine, peanut butter yours. Don’t hate, cause I thought of it first.” Natalie huffed. “And you’re supposed to be the smart one.”
“Clearly I am not.”

Annnnnd scene. Well. Not really. There's more. But my lips are sealed. However, sign-up for my monthly newsletter and you'll receive the rest of this scene in your inbox this week and learn what Natalie and Ashley are up to. Plus when you sign-up you'll be entered for a chance to win an Of Lies and Zombies paperback!

It's a win-win, my friends. Don't think!

January In Review

January is coming to a close. This month has been an excursion in staying consistent and being a cheerleader for myself. Two things I suck at. But I am determined to fake it until I make it. It’s been a quiet, successful month during which I’ve reconnected with my love of book blogging, worked on making my work a priority, and stayed the course even when my brain screamed at me to quit. Here are a few things that kept me sane along the way.

Good Shows
We started watching Brooklyn 99.
Love. Love. Love. All the characters.
Especially Captain Holt.

Good Music
Like Weezer's Teal Album.
Which I'm in love with and have listened to a billion times.

Good Food
I heart soup.
And winter is the perfect season for it.
Here's a quick, easy Ramen recipe our family adores:

And here's a pic from when we made it last week.
As you can see, we skip the cherry tomatoes.
But mushroom broth is a MUST.
We've tried it without and it's not the same.

Good Books
goodreads
As I mentioned in my top five comfort reads post,
Ms. Allen is an author I reread often.
This month I finished Lost Lake for the millionth time.
When I finished the book, I thought about rereading it. True story.
You can check out the other books I read this month on GoodReads.

Good Words
This month I stopped focusing on word count goals and publishing deadlines. I focused instead on a brand new All The What Ifs bonus chapter. A heads up for those of you who’ve read the All The What Ifs bonus chapter in Of Lies and Zombies, the new scene I am working on takes place the day before and is from Ashley’s perspective! And if that wasn't awesome enough, the new scene will be in next month’s newsletter! You. Are. Welcome.

Writing about Ashley and her friends again felt like coming home. It reminded how much I loved writing All The What Ifs and how excited I am to finish the Richmond High Series.

It’s a solid start to a good year. And I’m thankful for it plus looking forward to next month and the awesome to come.

How was your month, my friends?

Title: A Moment Under The Moon*
Author: Ang Writes

Toast: Michael & Anna, I wish you a lifetime together filled with laughter to get you through the sorrow, cookies for every rainy day, and love, the world's most powerful of magics. Congrats!

 A Moment Under The Moon

Briana’s frantic gaze scanned the forest. Her toes curled into the grass as she breathed in the crisp air.

Her head swung toward the house behind her. When her fiance, Daniel, turned onto the unpaved road leading toward his childhood home, she’d believed he’d driven into a fairy tale. Lilacs lined the lane. Tree limbs stretched out toward her in greeting. Briana had stuck her face out the window. The sun beat down on it. Her laughter soared toward the sky. Daniel’s hand slipped into hers and she’d sighed.

Now, by the light of the moon, the fairy tale shifted into a nightmare. The trees grasped at her, their intent sinister. The sweet scent of lilacs overwhelmed her, causing her stomach to churn.

From deep within the forest a voice called to her—chilled her soul. She’d awoken to a whisper in her ear, cajoling her to get out of bed, to forget her shoes, her sanity, and run head long into the night. It beckoned to her, promised her mysterious things.

Her feet itched, while her addled thoughts rebelled. Try as she might, the desire to move became irresistible. Her mud-caked foot took a hesitant step toward the forest. Just one more step and she’d be swallowed whole. She shuddered and her foot lifted.

“Briana! Stop!”

Briana froze. She turned in place and watched Daniel running full-tilt toward her. He halted in front of her and yanked her to his side. He examined the forest, his face made of stone. The roughness of his grip and the intensity of his expression shocked Briana.

“What’s gotten into you, Daniel? You’re hurting me.”

“What’s gotten into me? I think the better question is, why are your feet bare?” he asked eyes on the forest.

“They are?” she asked looking down at her feet. “Huh. They are.”

“And why have you fled the house? Have you decided to leave me stranded at the altar?”

“What if I had?” she asked. The full force of his dark chocolate eyes landed on her, melting her insides.

“You think it would be that easy to jilt me, Miss. Kelly?”

A smile tugged at the corner of her lips and she shrugged.

“Marry me,” he said.

“I already said yes.”

“No. Now.”

“What? How? We don’t have a preacher or witnesses.”

“The stars will be our witnesses, the moon our preacher.”

“What about a ring?”

Daniel leaned down and plucked a daffodil from the ground, looping it into a circle.

“Any other reasons?” he asked.

“Look at me. My hair is a mess. My feet are caked in mud. And I’m pretty sure there is drool on my chin.”

Daniel brushed a strand of her hair behind her ear. A thrill raced along Briana’s spine.

“You’re beautiful, Briana Kelly, more radiant than the moon and the stars, softer and finer than a petal. I have never loved a person the way I love you. Have never wanted someone the way I want you. I long to spend my life with you, have babies with you, grow old with you, and in death, lay beside you. Please, marry me, here and now, be mine.”

Briana blinked back tears. Daniel took her left hand in his, pulling her closer to him.

“Say you’ll be mine,” he said.

“I’m yours. And you are mine.”

“For all time,” he said and kissed her as he slipped the flower onto her finger.

A screech filled the night, a whipping of the wind that slammed into Briana’s back.

“What was that?” she asked against his lips.

“An old friend.”

Briana pulled away from him, her gaze questioning.

“Come on, Mrs. McConnell. Let’s get you inside before you catch a cold.”

He lifted her into his arms and pulled her tight against his chest. Her arms wrapped around his neck.

“What’s going on?” she asked.

“You wouldn’t believe me.”

“Try me.”

“One day.”

“But not today.”

“No. Not today.”

Daniel turned toward the house. Briana glanced down at the ring on her finger, now silvery in the moonlight, no longer made of steams and leaves, but pure gold.

“Daniel, the ring! But how?”

“One day I’ll explain, my fairy queen. One day.”

This week's word is: WORDS.

And the following is my humble offerings.
---------------------------------------------------
 Stay

The sound of her voice trickled into his ear-- soft, pleading, broken.

He struggled against the fog that stole her from him and pain greeted him, sharp, cruel pain that poked and prodded him.

“Please stay,” he finally heard.

He became aware of the feel of her hand in his, the rough crisp sheets beneath him, the persistent beeping of a machine, the sharp smell of ammonia and sickness.

Stay, he chanted pushing past panic and fear as he attempted to squeeze her hand, just stay.
---------------------------------------------------

Annnnnnnnd scene!
*dramatic bow*

Make sure to check out this week's participants here.
And don't forget to write your own fic.

Love Bites Blog Hop: A Wish

Lilith’s head rested against Matt’s shoulder. He twirled a strand of her hair around his finger. He felt the gentle rise and fall of her body. Heard the sigh escape her lips when he brushed a kiss against her unblemished forehead. The scent of her perfume made his head swim and he pulled her closer.

Was this love? Matt had thought himself incapable of love. Emma, his ex, had called him heartless. Maybe she’d been right. Love had never been a priority, until now.

Matt lowered his lips to Lilith’s and kissed her eager mouth, pouring into their kiss his unspoken love.

“It’s about time,” she said.

Pain sliced into Matt, a sharp, unforgiving spasm starting in his chest and radiating throughout his body.

He looked down in shock at the knife sticking out of his chest. Their eyes collided and he gasped in horror.

Lilith’s beautiful face now marred with deep scars. Her eyes blood red, her teeth jagged. He tried to shout yet his lips sealed shut. His body betrayed him, held in place by an unknown force.

She cackled, an unearthly screech.

Her skilled hands wielded the knife as she craved into him, delighting as his eyes filled with terror and agony. She reached into his body, grasped his heart, and tugged, ripping it from his chest.

Matt watched his heart beat in her hand. Blood dripped from her fingertips.

Her face hovered close to his. Her putrid breath bathed his face.

“Emma says hello.”

Five Sentence Fiction -- Foggy

Once again, party people, I'm trying something new.
What might that be?
Why, Five Sentence Fiction, but of course.
Lillie McFerrin is the creative mastermind behind Five Sentence Fiction.
Here's a breakdown of what it's all about:
Five Sentence Fiction is about packing a powerful punch in a tiny fist. Each week I will post a one word inspiration, then anyone wishing to participate will write a five sentence story based on the prompt word. The word does not have to appear in your five sentences, just use it for direction.
Cool beans, right?!
I thought so.
Plus, the number five is involved,
there is no way I could possibly pass this up!
So, let's give this a go, shall we?
*rubs hands together*

The newest word is foggy.
The following is my humble first offering.

Shelby’s thoughts were sluggish, her body heavy, her senses dull. The sound of beeping poked at her, the air thick with the scent of ammonia. She felt the prick of a needle and tried to focus on the voices swarming above her. Her murky mind struggled to see beyond the haze, tried to grab onto something concrete. But the gloom rolled over her, wave after wave of mist, and she sank deeper into its embrace.

Sophie opened her bedroom door in a stupor. She stood in the threshold and examined the room. Everything was in its place— same pale blue walls, same white curtains, same quilted bedspread. Pictures of her friends lined the vanity mirror and a pair of socks dangled from the hamper. She breathed in the scent of cinnamon. All of it familiar, yet none of it felt real.

Closing the bedroom door, she walked to her bed and dropped down to sit, resting her head in her hands. Her eyes slide shut and she ran her fingers through her hair. Behind her eyelids, she envisioned a field of gold and a barefoot young man running through it. His laughter filled her ears.

“This is my world. This is where I belong. This is my reality,” she said over and over again, her voice whisper soft and lacking conviction.

Sophie raised her head. Her eyes scanned the room once more and collided with her reflection in the vanity’s mirror.  Her face looked haggard—her green eyes lined with red, her dark hair wild.

Could he be watching her? she wondered. Her stomach fluttered at the thought. She knew the probability of him being there was slim to none, but just the thought made her heart swell and her hands tremble.

Sophie stood and walked toward the vanity, but stopped in the middle of the room. She reminded herself to breathe, begged her heart to slow down, believed she might be insane. But she knew the impossible truth, Luke was real.

There were so many things she had wanted to tell him, but didn’t. And maybe, just maybe, she could say them now and he would know how she felt.

She swallowed hard and took the final steps that brought her directly in front of the mirror. Her knees pushed up against the table.

Sophie raised her hand, stretching her fingers out wide. Her palm connected with the hard cold glass of the mirror and she shivered.

“Luke,” she whispered and stalled.

She drew in an unsteady breath and imagined she was staring into his eyes. She watched a tear slip down her cheek.

“Luke, if you’re there, I…” she paused, closed her eyes tight and started again. “I just wanted to say thank you. Thank you for bring me into your world, for sharing your magic with me. I wish I could have… I wish I would have told you, but I was frightened.”

Sophie’s eyes popped open and she looked into the mirror— deep into the mirror— past the image of herself and straight into the heart of the world beyond it.

“I love you,” she said. “And I will never forget you.”

On the other side of the mirror, a young man stood with his hand pressed in perfect alignment with Sophie’s and his eyes stared directly into hers.

“I love you too,” he whispered.

The Lucky Seven Meme

Hey howdy hey, party people.
Just shy of a month ago
the loveliness that is Angie Richmond
of Write Me Happy tagged me in a meme post.
My motto in life is better late than never,
so let's get this party started, shall we?!

Here's how the meme works:

Go to page 7 or 77 of your current MS/WIP
Go to line 7
Copy down the next 7 lines, sentences or paragraphs and post them as they are written.
Tag 7 authors and let them know.
Since I am all about loving the one your with,
I've decided to post an excerpt from a story I wrote
just last Friday based on a dream I had a few weeks ago.
I decided to do seven paragraphs.
p.s. This is barely editing and smack dab in the middle of a scene.
Have fun.

Darcy and Gideon—unable to see more than a foot in front of them—shuffled down the steep stairs, testing each step as they descended into the darkness. The weight of Violet on her back pressed into Darcy and she feared tripping. The end of the staircase brought them to a doorway made of dirt, rocks, and tree roots. They walked through the threshold and entered a cavern. The ground and walls were made of packed earth. Roots and stones jutted out of the walls. The scent of decaying vegetation filled the space and made it hard to breath.  Dust filled Darcy’s nose and mouth. She glanced above her and stifled a scream.  A man and woman hung from the ceiling. The man dressed in a tux complete with gloves and a top hat. The woman wore a long gown of white shredded at the hem. Their feet were bare. Skeletal in appearance, their glowing faces were as sharp and angular as the mysterious man the children had followed.

“They are the guardians,” the man said gaining Darcy’s attention.

“The guardians of what?” she asked.

“Of this world and the next,” he said. With a sweep of his arm a door appeared in the wall of the cavern. “They have agreed to allow you four children entrance, but they have rules you must abide by.”

“Rules?” Darcy asked.

“You are not to eat or drink anything beyond this door,” the man said.

“But how will we…” Gideon began.
Annnnnd time!
Now onto the fun part.

The following contest is hosted by @ruanna3 & @SJIHolliday.
You can find the guidelines at Yearning for Wonderland.

 And without further ado,
I give you a little ditty I shall now dub--

Once Upon A Puzzle

“Mom?” Adam whispered.

Adam’s wide eyes scanned the cramped space, a beat-up desk, two chairs— one wobbly, one with duct tape across its center—and scuffed yellowed linoleum. Huddled against a grease stained wall, Adam searched for his mother. One moment, she’d been sitting at the desk working on a jigsaw puzzle, while telling him a story about a panda bear who’d lost his teapot and had to travel from China to Australia to steal it back from a pesky kangaroo, when poof, she’d vanished.

His mother had been driving him to school that morning when their tire had blown out. They’d found themselves stranded in front of an auto shop. A man covered in grease and smelling of gas had ushered them into the waiting room. He’d grunted indiscernible words and disappeared through the only door in the room. Seeing a half finished puzzle on the desk, Adam’s mom started working on it, while Adam slumped in a chair.

Panic caused Adam’s heart to pound, his hands slick, his mouth dry. The windowless room pressed in on him, the air stale. His ears hummed and the tang of acid filled his mouth. A tear slipped down Adam’s cheek and he brushed it away. He straightened from the wall with a quick jerk.

Light pulsed from the table where he’d last seen his mother. Adam’s feet dragged as he walked toward the table. The light wasn’t coming from the desk, but from the completed puzzle. Adam’s body shook as he reached out a hand toward the puzzle. He wanted to stop himself, but couldn’t. His fingers brushed its corner.

“Adam!” He jerked his hand back, cradling it to his body.

He glanced around the room, his eyes wild. He’d heard his mother yell his name. But how?

“Mom?” Adam reached out once more, laying his palm flat on the puzzle.

“Adam, run!”

Adam’s hand fused with the puzzle. He gasped and bumped into the desk’s chair, which landed with a crash. The light of the puzzle faded as the door creaked open and laughter filled the empty room.
